Emergency Fund Program
Climate change is having a profound impact across British Columbia—wildfires, droughts, and shifting water conditions are threatening ecosystems and species, including several Pacific salmon now listed as threatened or endangered.
Launched in 2024, the Emergency Fund Program is a partnership between the Indigenous Stewardship Fund (ISF) and the First Nations Fisheries Council (FNFC). This program provides rapid support for urgent, Indigenous-led environmental restoration projects that protect and restore salmon populations and their habitats.
Eligible projects may include:
• Wildfire recovery
• Drought relief
• Water flow augmentation
• Temperature monitoring
• Rescue of at-risk aquatic species
• Other critical environmental interventions
Indigenous communities hold generations of stewardship knowledge rooted in deep connection to land and water. Now, more than ever, it is crucial to advance indigenous-led stewardship projects that integrate traditional knowledge with modern science to protect and restore salmon populations.
Since its inception, the Emergency Fund Program has supported numerous First Nations in strengthening their stewardship and advancing environmental restoration efforts in B.C.
